Guelmim-Smara: More than 729 million DH allocated to the agricultural sector

The Chamber of Agriculture of Guelmim-Smara and the Regional Directorate of Agriculture organised, in partnership with the wilaya of the region and the urban commune of Guelmim, the second edition of the Agricultural Fair of the Guelmim-Smara region. This event, organised from 26 to 28 June, took place under the theme "The qualification of professional agricultural organisations is a guarantee of sustainable development".

Several workshops and conferences were organised during the days of the fair, including one relating to the role of rural women in the development of local agricultural production. Another workshop was devoted to the role of this same woman in the valorisation of local products, their marketing, preservation, and dissemination.

The region accounts for 85% of all dromedaries in the Saharan provinces. With this rate, it occupies a prominent place at the national level with 4% of meat production. On the occasion of the opening of this workshop, the president of the Chamber of Agriculture emphasised the importance of the pachyderm in the context of the national economy. He insisted on the importance that breeders must attach to the various meetings in which they participate, to acquire a maximum of experience and knowledge that can help them improve ancestral methods of dromedary breeding. Another workshop was devoted to the analysis of the agricultural sector's balance sheet during the 2010-2012 period. This balance sheet reported 14 projects carried out within the framework of the regional agricultural plan. These projects cost 729.508 million dirhams.

These projects, which focus on the development of various crops and camel breeding, have benefited some 32,000 farmers. Among these projects, some are intended for the promotion of cactus derivatives and the development of irrigated areas allowing for the development of cereal production.

Among these projects, there are also those relating to the purchase of enriched feed for livestock and the acquisition of tanker trucks and plastic reservoirs as well as the creation and development of water sources. It should be noted that the annual credits allocated to this programme have increased from 24 MDH in 2010 to 52 MDH in 2012.
