From December 28 to 30, Tata hosted the 3rd edition of the Oasis Festival, which every year honours oasis cultures through artistic and heritage exhibitions and conferences focused on sustainable development.
This edition, held over three days, was initiated by the Association of Oasis Festivals of Foum El-Hisn (140 km from Tata), the municipality of Foum El-Hisn, the Agency for the Development of the Southern Provinces, and the prefecture of Tata. The organisers chose the theme: "What future for oases in the era of climate change?", which reflects the threats currently weighing on these oases.
According to them, this event aims to showcase the cultural diversity of the Foum El-Hisn region, known for its oasis wealth, and provides an opportunity for farmers and professionals in the province to promote local products and exchange expertise in the agricultural field, particularly date palm cultivation. It also aims to promote and enhance the various aspects of the oasis lifestyle and highlight the natural and social heritage of the oases in all its material and immaterial forms.
This edition was marked by the organisation of a collective wedding ceremony for the benefit of young people in the region, as well as the organisation of artistic evenings featuring national singers and local folk groups. A study day was held on the sidelines of this festival on oasis tourism, during which geological sites found in Tata were presented.
As a reminder, the oases of this region contain a rich architectural heritage that has resisted the vagaries of time and are distinguished by the local population's attachment to its ancestral traditions. To safeguard them, an ambitious programme has been implemented since 2006 by the Agency for the Promotion and Economic and Social Development of the Southern Provinces of the Kingdom in partnership with the local communes of the provinces of Tata, Guelmim, and Assa-Zag, and with the support of the United Nations Development Programme, the Ministry of the Interior, and the regional council of Guelmim-Smara. It provides for the implementation of 218 projects at a cost of 65.5 million DH, based on an approach that rests on three axes: protecting resources, producing wealth, and enhancing territorial potential.
