Outcry against insecurity, incivility and the deficit in school equipment: Protests are in full swing in Essaouira

After the series of protests by the inhabitants of the Mellah neighbourhood and taxi drivers, Essaouira has just experienced new ones. On Monday 5 March 2012, the inhabitants of the Les Lagunes neighbourhood petitioned and filed a complaint with the King's Prosecutor at the court of first instance and the governor, asking for the restoration of order and security in their neighbourhood, which is suffering from an invasion of delinquents.

Contacted by "Libé", the petitioners state that they suffer daily from the worst forms of harassment, disturbance and assault, sometimes due to the excesses of people foreign to their neighbourhood who have made it a place for consuming drugs and alcohol. The inhabitants cite violent incidents that occurred in their neighbourhood, which has become the scene of fights and assaults. An alarming observation that has caused insecurity within families who feel increasingly threatened by these acts, which they consider inadmissible.

On Tuesday 6 March 2012, the pupils of the Nwaras high school observed a sit-in in front of the headquarters of the MEN delegation as a sign of protest against the deficit in equipment, and the lack of drinking water and electricity in their establishment.

The pupils were subsequently invited to take part in an open meeting with the delegate of the supervisory ministry in the presence of members of the management council as well as the association of parents and guardians of pupils.

On this occasion, the pupils reiterated their demands and demanded the scheduling of school support sessions capable of remedying the deficit in terms of learning. The delegate specified that the opening of the high school had been decided at the request of the pupils and their parents and guardians even before the completion of the construction and development work. To this effect, several works were not carried out to completion, as is the case for equipment and connection to drinking water, electricity and the liquid sanitation network. The MEN delegation, he affirmed, has already sent three formal notices to the company, inviting it to deliver the buildings and complete the programmed work as soon as possible, knowing that the role of his administration is limited to control and monitoring since the project was launched and financed at the regional level with the intervention of several partners. On the other hand, he committed to ensuring the connection to drinking water and electricity, while promising the didactic equipment required for the scientific and literary classes that will benefit from a support programme during the second semester.
