Discovery of the wrecks of two archaeological ships off the coast of the city of El Jadida (Centre)

Discovery of the wrecks of two archaeological ships off the coast of the city of El Jadida (Centre)

The Centre explained that this discovery falls within the framework of an underwater archaeological research programme that includes searching for new submerged archaeological sites and documenting other previously discovered sites.

The same source indicated that it concerns the wrecks of two iron ships, one near the beach of the city of El Jadida, and the second near the entrance to the port.

According to the initial descriptions of the wrecks, the Centre adds, it is possible to attribute the two ships to the second half of the nineteenth century, a period that coincided with the peak of the activities of the old port of El Jadida, which was then one of the most important Moroccan commercial ports.

It pointed out that historical data and nautical charts indicate the occurrence of several maritime accidents at the entrance to the port of El Jadida that led to the sinking of ships, most notably (l’Alcyne), (Le Papin), (Le Maroc), (La Marne), and (L’Amazone), accidents which are mostly attributed to the difficult entrance to the city's port, especially before the construction of the breakwater, as well as poor weather conditions.

The National Centre for Studies and Research in Underwater Cultural Heritage, affiliated with the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, announced the discovery of the wrecks of two archaeological ships off the coast of the city of El Jadida.
