This project, which is part of the rehabilitation and upgrading program of the old city of Chefchaouen, benefits from particular interest from the local authorities due to its contribution to the preservation of heritage richness and local development.
The fourth and final phase of the project to implement the architectural charter of the old city of Chefchaouen is entering its final stage to be delivered according to the pre-established agenda. Based on the latest official data, this project, which is experiencing strong mobilisation from all stakeholders due to its contribution to the preservation of heritage richness and local development, exceeds 98% completion overall. “This project is part of the rehabilitation and upgrading program of the old medina of Chefchaouen, in application of the High Orientations of HM King Mohammed VI aimed at preserving and enhancing the cultural and architectural heritage of the old medinas in Morocco,” according to a statement issued following a field visit by Nisrin Alami, Director of the Urban Agency of Tétouan (AUT), to the main districts and sites benefiting from this project in Chefchaouen.
Furthermore, this visit was part of a series of coordination meetings between the officials of the AUT, local authorities, and concerned external services, as well as representatives of the architectural design office responsible for supervising the works and the company in charge of carrying out the project, in order to examine the progress of this construction site. Launched on January 26, 2024, “the works of the fourth and final phase of the project concern the restoration of buildings located on the axis from Outa El Hammam to Bab El Aïn. They also include Saïda Hora street and the surrounding streets,” the same source specifies. Benefiting from particular interest from the local authorities, this project will, in its entirety, improve the living environment of the inhabitants and give new life to the cultural and historical sites that abound in the medina of Chefchaouen. Among these are those located on the Outa El Hamma-Bab El Aïn axis, considered among the most frequented places by national and international visitors. This axis continues, thanks to this ambitious project, to contribute to strengthening the popularity and promoting the tourist attractiveness of Chefchaouen. Especially since it includes, in addition to historical, tourist, and religious sites, a significant number of shops selling traditional clothing, handicrafts, and local cuisine specific to the province, such as weaving (mendil, wool djellaba), dishes, etc., which arouse enthusiasm among visitors to the city. Benefiting from a strategic position among religious and worship sites (such as the grand mosque with its octagonal minaret and Nassiria zaouia) as well as the Kasbah, the Outa El Hammam square and the historical site of Bab El Aïn (one of the seven famous gates of the old city), are considered among the most mentioned on social media.
