About Chefchaouen
Chefchaouen (in Arabic: شفشاون) is a city in the north-west of Morocco, built at an altitude of 600 m at the foot of the Kelaa and Meggou mountains, which form the Jebel Chefchaouen, in the Rif mountain range. It is the capital of the province of the same name. Its population is 35,709 inhabitants.

The name of the town comes from the Berber 'Achawen', meaning 'the horns', due to the mountain peaks that overlook and surround the town. It was founded in the year 876 of the Hegira, 1471 of the Christian era, by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami.
