It was in a packed indoor hall that the Guelmim public cheered the players of four teams determined to collect the first three points of the tournament.
Thus, the local Ahwach musical troupe was followed by the players of the Hassania d'Agadir veteran teams, the very ones who had won the national football championship in its 2001-2002 edition. They were to dominate the match, directed by referee Hamdi, during both periods to get the better of the selection grouping artists and journalists: 5-1.
The second part pitted the veterans of the national team who had won the only Africa Cup of Nations (1976) against the former players of the local team of Jaouharat Sahara, or the pearl of Guelmim. This match, whistled by Yara, turned to the advantage of the EN 76 with a score of 4 to 2.
The morning of the second day of the event was devoted to social activities.
Thus, visitors, journalists, and athletes went to the Guelmim orphanage and the local headquarters of the Moroccan League for the Protection of Childhood.
The third day was marked by the entry into the competition of two youth football teams in the region who seduced the audience with the quality of their play. These two teams that played the Souss Cup are those of Jeunesse de Tarrasst and the youth of Bab Sahra. The match ended with a score of 3 to 2, in favour of the youth of Tarrasst who received the cup from the hands of the president of the Sahara Football League.
The consolation final saw the coalition of journalists and artists dispose of the veterans of Jaouharat Sahra by 7 to 3.
The final pitted the veterans of the national team against those of Hassania d'Agadir. Despite the good performance of Mustapha Hadji, this match ended in a draw: 2-2. And it was the Agadir team that won on penalties.
In a statement to Libé, the director of the event, Houcine Benaouisse, indicated that the organisation of the first edition of the Bab Sahara Cup tournament came at a time when the city of Guelmim is experiencing unparalleled development of infrastructure, particularly sports. It was necessary to organise this tournament, he added, to honour the veterans who have given so much to local and national sport, showing them the recognition of the young and not-so-young generations. But it was also necessary to draw the attention of young people to the existence of these infrastructures, which they must take advantage of to improve their level and flourish through sport.
Benaouisse stressed that in future editions, the emphasis will be placed essentially on the participation of youth in order to unearth the many talents of the region who can be known through the promotion of sport in general, and football in particular.
