In the past, the city of Agadir prided itself on possessing a few rare historical monuments and sites, witnesses to its distant past, which resisted the earthquake that destroyed it on 29 February 1960. These are the remains of the Portuguese fort, the Kasbah of Agadir Oufella and the old port pier that existed well before the construction of the city's old port.
But one fine day, this landing stage, which was located just in front of the place where the old weekly Souk of Lâarba n'Ougadir was held, was wiped off the map to make way for the realisation of a commercial project. This pier is therefore gone forever in the most total indifference.
The same happened to the cannons of the Kasbah, a good part of which were buried in the enclosure of the old Portuguese fort, and which disappeared one day as if by magic. Separated from their turrets which were abandoned on the site, the two large cannons, which served to defend the city against any foreign invasion, were moved and today adorn the steps of the wilaya of the Souss-Massa Drâa region. Others, of small calibre, were saved in extremis, and are currently exhibited at the entrance to the souvenir museum in the Olhão garden. And we still ask ourselves the following question: but where did the other cannons of the Kasbah go?
The Kasbah, which housed a beautiful, very lively neighbourhood before the earthquake, became a collective cemetery after the 1960 disaster. Only the mausoleum of Sidi Boujemâa Aguenaou watches over the place, which has been visually polluted by a dozen antennas or satellite dishes. And once again, nothing has been done to enforce the texts protecting this historical site classified under the Dahir of 13 February 1914 on the conservation of historical monuments and the Dahir of 23 March 1944 on the classification of the Kasbah of Agadir Ighir as well as the ministerial circular n°73/d of 30 December 1992 relating to the application of legislation on the safeguarding of historical monuments and sites.
It is therefore to be hoped that these antennas and satellite dishes will finally be moved to another place and that the Kasbah of Agadir Oufella, which the urban commune has begun to rehabilitate, will be cleared of them once and for all.
