Casablanca – The Regional Multiservice Company Casablanca-Settat, as part of its 2025 investment program and in light of water stress, intends to launch 211 drinking water projects with a total financial investment of 5.3 billion dirhams.
A statement from the company explained that on the sidelines of World Water Day, which the world celebrates on March 22nd of each year, the company presents its measures and projects aimed at securing the region's supply of drinking water.
This celebration aims, according to the same source, to draw public attention to the situation of 2.2 billion people around the world who have not been able to access safe drinking water, and to call on everyone to take practical measures to confront the global water crisis.
Through this occasion, the United Nations seeks, in particular, to support the achievement of the sixth Sustainable Development Goal: ensuring access to water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Securing the supply of drinking water throughout the region:
In this context, the regional company has programmed the construction of 12 water reservoirs distributed throughout the territorial jurisdiction of the Casablanca-Settat region this year, with a financial investment of 155 million dirhams (excluding tax) to be spent during 2025.
With an additional total volume of 277,000 cubic meters, these reservoirs will allow the company's storage capacity to be increased by more than 22 percent, bringing the total storage capacity to more than 1.1 million cubic meters of water.
The company will also launch a project to secure the supply of drinking water in the region from the future Casablanca seawater desalination plant project, with a total investment cost of 2.15 billion dirhams (excluding tax).
This new plant, which will be built over two years, will allow the region to be supplied with water with a production capacity that could reach 300 million cubic meters per year.
The works include the construction of a 118 km pipeline with a diameter ranging between 600 mm and 1,800 mm, and two water reservoirs in Sahel Oulad H’riz (Berrechid province) with storage capacities of 30,000 cubic meters and 60,000 cubic meters of water, in addition to two pumping stations with a capacity of 6,000 liters/second and 9,800 liters/second.
On the other hand, in order to face the challenges of water stress, which have been exacerbated by climate change and demographic pressure, the State has decided to prioritize securing the supply of drinking water to the most affected populations. For this purpose, an emergency program has been launched to meet immediate needs while strengthening the resilience of regions in the face of water scarcity.
For the Casablanca-Settat region, the project overseen by the Regional Multiservice Company includes the construction of 33 mobile stations for desalination and demineralization of brackish water, with a total capacity of 255 liters/second, equivalent to 8 million cubic meters per year.
The project, which has been allocated a budget of 400 million dirhams, is currently being implemented, with 11 stations out of the 33 programmed already in operation (6 stations in the Settat province, 2 stations in the Berrechid province, 2 stations in the Sidi Bennour province, and 1 station in the El Jadida province).
A sustained action plan for detecting and repairing water leaks:
The Regional Multiservice Company Casablanca-Settat has put in place a sustained action plan aimed at detecting and repairing water leaks in the network and at the connection level, fighting fraud, and adjusting water pressure.
The company relies on a set of innovative technologies to implement this plan, including the “Aquadvanced” mechanism, geographical division of the network, “Smart Ball” technology for detecting leaks on main lines, and acoustic detection devices with radio technology.
For example, in the territory of the Casablanca and Mohammedia prefectures, the company deploys 31 teams specialized in searching for leaks and dividing the drinking water network, in addition to a fleet of 3,600 fixed acoustic leak detection devices. The action plan launched by the company since October 2024 has saved more than 3.5 million cubic meters of water by the end of February 2025.
The leak search operation covered about 19,500 km of the distribution network, equivalent to 2.5 times the length of the entire network. In just four months, the company inspected about 7,900 kilometers of networks. In total, 1,971 water leaks were repaired (410 on main pipes and 1,561 at the connection and metering center level). 12 km of main transport pipes (feeder) were also inspected and 13 water leaks were discovered.
The Regional Multiservice Company Casablanca-Settat opens its doors for awareness visits to conserve water:
As part of its involvement in the sustainable development of the region, the Regional Multiservice Company Casablanca-Settat conducts awareness campaigns on water and environmental conservation. The company opens its doors to organize awareness visits to its facilities for the benefit of students from educational institutions, civil society actors, and elected officials.
Since the beginning of the year, several guided visits to the Médiouna wastewater treatment plant have been organized for the benefit of hundreds of students. These educational visits aim to educate participants about the water cycle, especially the importance of reusing treated water for watering green spaces, and adopting daily “economic behaviors” in using water in a rational and responsible manner.
