Drâa-Tafilalet: Focus on the opportunities and challenges of oasis women's entrepreneurship

Errachidia – The opportunities and challenges inherent to the entrepreneurship of oasis women in the Drâa-Tafilalet region were at the centre of a symposium organised, Thursday in Aoufous (Errachidia province).

Initiated by the European Institute for Cooperation and Development (IECD-Morocco), this meeting, in which representatives of the National Agency for the Development of Oasis and Argan Trees (ANDZOA), National Mutual Aid, the Regional Directorate of Agriculture of Drâa-Tafilalet, ANAPEC, in addition to several women's cooperatives and civil society actors took part, was an opportunity to shine the spotlight on the various constraints faced by the female entrepreneurial ecosystem as well as the opportunities and means likely to promote better involvement of women in the regional economic fabric.

During this meeting, the emphasis was placed on the efforts made by public actors in terms of improving the conditions and situation of women and the means of strengthening capacities and economic empowerment of this segment of society in a way that allows it to play a more important role in the development of society.

In a statement to MAP, the executive director of IECD-Morocco, Nabil Jadri, indicated that this meeting, which is part of a series of events organised by the IECD in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, intends to create a space for exchange and sharing with key actors of entrepreneurship, mainly female.

” We are taking this opportunity to present to local and regional actors the first results of a regional gender diagnostic study conducted by IECD-Morocco before finalising these results on the basis of the proposals and opinions of local actors and developing a document that is intended to be an element of capitalisation for other initiatives aimed at promoting economic development in the region”, he explained.

In a similar statement, Nouhaila Hassani Alaoui, president of the Amal cooperative for the valorisation of date palm residues, stressed that she had taken full advantage of the Support for Young Entrepreneurs (AJEE) project supervised by the IECD in collaboration with the main actors of the region, and which aims to promote an inclusive ecosystem favourable to the emergence and strengthening of economic activities carried by young women and men of the Drâa-Tafilalet region.

This meeting was also an opportunity for several women to present their successful experiences, their future perspectives, as well as to review the various constraints faced by women's cooperatives in the region, notably marketing, project development, access to financing, or even access to information.
