Drâa-Tafilalet: Highlighting the role of prison institutions in the field of environmental education

Errachidia – The role of prison institutions in environmental education and raising awareness about the importance of water resources in the Drâa-Tafilalet region was the focus of the proceedings of the fourteenth session of the "University in Prisons" programme, which was organised on Tuesday and Wednesday at the local prison in Errachidia, on the initiative of the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration.

This 14th session of the programme, organised under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, was distinguished at the Drâa-Tafilalet region level by the holding of a series of workshops aimed at promoting a culture of water resource conservation and the rational management of this vital material, as well as exploring the best solutions to ensure the optimal use of water.

During the opening session, which took place in the presence of the Wali of the Drâa-Tafilalet region, the governor of the Errachidia province, representatives of the judicial authorities, heads of external services, elected officials, and a number of civil society actors, the role of prisons in environmental education was emphasised, in addition to the scientific and religious dimensions related to the problem of pollution and the importance of environmental education as a tool for the reintegration of prisoners.

In a speech on this occasion, the regional director of the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration for Drâa-Tafilalet, Redouane Chitioui, indicated that the General Delegation, since the launch of the first session of "University in Prisons", has highlighted issues with social, legal, and cultural dimensions and opened rich discussions with the participation of inmates of prison institutions, experts, and academics, before presenting scientific proposals and recommendations.

He added that the interest that the prison institution pays to the issue of water is not a coincidence, given that the Drâa-Tafilalet region, like the other regions of the Kingdom, has been significantly affected by successive years of drought and water stress, highlighting that this issue is part of the missions of the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration, which is keen to promote a culture of water conservation and environmental protection.

For his part, the dean of the Polydisciplinary Faculty in Errachidia, Mohcine Tilioua, confirmed that the ambitious "University in Prisons" programme embodies the Kingdom's firm commitment to the path of reform and reintegration, and the dissemination of values of knowledge and awareness in various spaces of society, including prison institutions.

In this regard, he pointed to the agreement signed by the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration with Moulay Ismail University, which forms a framework for scientific and cultural cooperation aimed at developing academic training and education within prison spaces and providing an educational environment for inmates, enabling them to develop their knowledge and acquire the necessary skills for their reintegration into society after the end of the sentence period.

This session also witnessed interventions by representatives of the Regional Academy for Education and Training of Drâa-Tafilalet, the National Agency for the Development of Oases and Argan Trees, the Regional Human Rights Committee, and the Regional Scientific Council, who emphasised the importance of the topic chosen for this session of "University in Prisons" and reviewed the sustainable development goals and their relationship with prison institutions.

At the conclusion of this meeting, a partnership agreement was signed between the Regional Academy for Education and Training of Drâa-Tafilalet and the local prison in Errachidia, which aims to enhance education services and programmes directed at the inmates of this prison institution.
