Rabat.. Presentation of the book "On the Richter Scale: What Wasn't Told in Journalists' Coverage of the Al Haouz Earthquake"

This work, published by Dar Agora in 159 pages of medium format, stems from the urgent need to document field journalistic experiences in the face of disasters, and represents a reflective journey into the essence of journalism and its role during crises.

This work also highlights, according to its coordinators, the need to develop an academic model that integrates theory and practice, links professional ethics with practical requirements, and starts from the field to formulate a model and guide for journalistic work that goes beyond conventional formats.

This book is about "a living testimony that blends professional experience with human aspects", and it "reflects another side of journalists as individuals who interact deeply with the pulse of life around them, committed to conveying the truth to an audience that relies on their news".

Journalist Oussama Baji, one of the book's coordinators, said on the occasion that this publication documents the experiences of a number of journalists in covering the repercussions of the Al Haouz earthquake and what they went through, in a narrative format that simultaneously employs sociological, anthropological, professional, and ethical approaches.

Baji added that these journalists' testimonies reveal, among other things, the need to enhance training in media coverage of crises and to handle them professionally and ethically.

The contributions of some journalists who participated in this work highlighted the need to train media professionals in handling crises, and to organise workshops as part of continuous training for them, enabling them to produce high-quality professional work.

The speakers also stressed the need for media organisations to equip their journalists with the tools and means to work during crises, taking into account the safety precautions that must be observed in this context.

This meeting, attended by media professionals and civil society actors, was also an opportunity to call on journalists to document their professional experiences in works that enrich the national library and serve as documents that can benefit researchers and general readers alike.

Today, Thursday in Rabat, the book "On the Richter Scale: What Wasn't Told in Journalists' Coverage of the Al Haouz Earthquake" was presented. It is a collective work containing nine stories by journalists from various national media outlets who covered the repercussions of this event that struck the region in September 2023.
