Development projects in Tarfaya: Meeting of the INDH Provincial Commission

Development projects in Tarfaya: Meeting of the INDH Provincial Commission

On national road 1, 100 km north of Laâyoune, one is suddenly surprised by the appearance, between the sand dunes, of Tarfaya.

These dunes that had inspired, in the past, the French pilot and writer Antoine de Saint Exupéry. Having recently become a province, the authorities are doing everything so that Tarfaya, until then left in oblivion, catches up and experiences growth like the other Saharan provinces.

It is in this context that the governor of this province presided over the session of the INDH Provincial Commission, the second since its accession to the rank of province. Previously, its fate was decided in Laâyoune. This is what some of the participants in the session did not fail to recall, by speaking of certain projects that are experiencing difficulties and which are, they specify, a legacy of the past.

The agenda, which was debated for more than three hours by the participants, who included local officials, elected officials, and representatives of civil society, included the following points:

- Study and approval of projects in the context of the fight against poverty;

- Study and approval of provincial training and communication plans;

- Study and methods of supplying nomads with drinking water and solar energy.

The head of the social service stressed that since the launch of the INDH, 56 projects have been carried out in this context, including 36 in 2011.

During his speech, the governor cited certain projects completed or in the process of being completed, notably the mangrove plantations planned to cover 300 ha, 60 of which are already planted successfully.

Another programme will focus on the development of sebkhas, while preserving the environment, and ensuring that the exploitation of these sebkhas takes place under scientific conditions.

Najim Abhaye stressed the importance of the development of the agricultural sector in the rural commune of Daoura where the authorities plan to develop the granary, if not of the entire region, at least of the province.

In the context of the fight against poverty and school dropout, a project for the construction of student houses for boys and girls was adopted.

For the development of the tourism sector, the participants approved the project for the restoration of the "Casamar" house and the Ain Tissegrade spring in order to attach them to the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry museum.

Finally, projects concerning the financing of certain associations whose contribution to social development has been proven were adopted.
