The participants in the National Assizes of Moroccan Culture, initiated by the Union of Moroccan Writers (UEM), examined, on Saturday in Tangier, a series of questions related to cultural policy and diplomacy, culture and intangible capital, culture and regionalisation, and culture and the media.
These questions, treated in thematic workshops, reflect the desire of the UEM and its institutional and associative partners to rehabilitate the place of the intellectual and define the role that falls to them in the current context, just as they aim to reconsider the fundamental questions treated within the framework of cultural action with a view to setting priorities and tracing a roadmap that can enrich and strengthen Moroccan culture while opening up to universal values.
Thus, the "cultural policy and diplomacy" workshop addresses the mechanisms and means of integrating culture into society, notably through school programmes, training sessions, and awareness-raising actions, as well as the place of culture in building bridges between Morocco and world cultures. While the "culture and intangible capital" workshop looks into the UEM's perception regarding the exploitation of various national symbolic resources in the implementation of integrated development programmes.
Concerning the "culture and regionalisation" and "popular culture" workshops, they try to highlight the different regional cultural representations of the Kingdom and the means to value and promote them as national heritage.
The "culture and the media" workshop, for its part, stops to examine the efforts of the media in accompanying the development that the national cultural scene is experiencing at the level of literary, intellectual, and artistic production.
The programme of the assizes also provides for workshops focusing on "thought and values", "identity and cultural and linguistic plurality", "culture and communication", "creativity and translation", "writing", "reading", "publishing and distribution", "theatre", "cinema", "visual arts", and "music".
The work of this important cultural event will be closed by the publication of the Tangier Cultural Manifesto, which will present the recommendations and conclusions of the various commissions of the National Assizes of Moroccan Culture.
It should be noted that this event is marked by the participation of several national actors and competencies in the cultural field, including thinkers, researchers, experts, artists, and journalists. Representatives of the legislative institution, government departments, and bodies, associations, and cultural, artistic, and human rights centres of different tributaries are also taking part in this major meeting.
