The Cervantes Institute, in collaboration with Latin American countries, is organising the first Latin Cinema Festival which will take place in Rabat, from 8 to 18 April. Nine films are on the programme for this edition which promises an opening to these regions through their cinematographic productions made in Spanish.
"This idea was born to consolidate the mission of the Cervantes Institute and pursue its strategy which is none other than the dissemination of the Spanish language and culture. As there were no events bringing these countries together, it would be good to have a film festival with samples of the culture of each country. Moreover, all the countries were delighted with the idea and intend to develop it in the future.
This will allow them to present their culture and make it known to Moroccans. Some even plan to screen documentaries about their country," underlines the coordinator of Cervantes centres in Morocco, Javier Galván, who did not fail to specify, during the press conference presenting the content and philosophy of the festival, that the Institute can play a role as a bridge between Morocco and Latin America. "Which could facilitate the development of relations between these countries, while respecting our vocation and our loyalty to our work of disseminating the culture of Spanish-speaking countries". Thus, each participating country (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Venezuela) will be represented through a cinematographic production. And this, around themes as diverse, highlighting the level of development of the film industry in each of these countries.
The Mexican ambassador also welcomed being part of this event, in the company of the embassies of Spanish-speaking countries accredited in Morocco. "This festival will allow the Moroccan public to learn about the current state of the cinematographies of Latin American countries which have brought their creativity and talent to the collective imagination of the 7th Art. This will offer a perspective of the cultural diversity of Spanish speakers united by the same geographical and cultural ocean that brings us closer to the aesthetic values of Morocco. This festival constitutes for us a great step to be able to integrate ourselves into Moroccan cultural life through the film industry of Latin America," he explains. The Chilean ambassador to Morocco also finds that this beautiful opportunity is really to be welcomed. "Our cinema is on the right track. Moroccans will surely love it".
