With a total area of 7,500 m², the new hospital establishment, with a capacity of 108 beds, includes services for the treatment of psychotic and neurotic diseases, isolation, emergency, and consultation services, an administrative block, and a social activity and occupational therapy room. It also includes child psychiatry, geronto-psychiatry, psycho-physiology, and addiction services, as well as a training centre for doctors and nurses. In addition to its primary vocation of care, the Mohammed VI Psychiatry Hospital will thus ensure training and continuing education missions, just as it will work in favour of the social reintegration of patients. Still within the framework of the promotion of mental health, a new national strategy in the matter has been put in place and is articulated around five main axes, namely the strengthening of the supply of care, the development of medical and paramedical skills, the conclusion of partnerships, the improvement of the legal framework, and the adoption of a new drug policy. Regarding the strengthening of the supply of care, the creation of three regional psychiatric hospitals (Agadir, Kenitra, and Kelâa des Sraghna), the construction of three child psychiatry units (Rabat, Fez, and Marrakech), and the realisation of ten integrated mental health services within public hospitals are planned. On the “Development of medical and paramedical skills” component, it will be a question of increasing the number of specialised doctors (psychiatry, child psychiatry, and addiction) and nurses, creating perinatal mental health and psychiatry services within the University Hospital Centres, and developing the skills of the various actors concerned, in particular general practitioners and members of civil society. Endowed with a budget of 749.9 million dirhams, the national strategy (2012-2016) also provides for the conclusion of partnerships with the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, the National Initiative for Human Development, and the Grand Casablanca region. As for the legal framework, the strategy sets itself the objectives of revising the Dahir of 30 April 1959 relating to the prevention and treatment of mental illnesses and the protection of the mentally ill, as well as the creation of a National Observatory for Drugs and Addictions. The Ministry of Health also intends, under this strategy, to allocate more than 2% of the budget dedicated to medicines to those prescribed for the treatment of psychiatric and mental illnesses.
