Rehabilitation of the Kasbah on the agenda

Rehabilitation of the Kasbah on the agenda

Is the heritage of the city of Mohammedia in danger? The least we can say is that many heritage riches of the seaside city no longer exist, some have been demolished and others continue to deteriorate. The most striking example is the demolition of the city of tranquillity, built in 1929, and the current state of the interior of the Kasbah, notably the old buildings, some of which threaten to collapse. The restoration work on the Kasbah's perimeter wall, located on Rue d'Alger along the Moulay Abdellah hospital, was not carried out according to the rules of the art. Proof of this is the current state of a part of the wall which is already beginning to deteriorate. The services concerned must show rigour regarding the quality of the work.

For a few days now, the second phase of the rehabilitation work has begun. This work concerns the other part of the Kasbah's perimeter wall, located on Rue Abderrahmane Serghini and Rue Moulay Youssef. "The restoration work on the old urban fabric must be carried out with authentic materials, particularly fermented earth based on lime and traditional bricks," explains a specialist in the field. In addition to the work, it is especially necessary to ensure the maintenance and protection of what has been achieved. For example, in addition to its deterioration, the part of the wall located on Rue d'Alger, recently restored, is the target of unconscious young people who do not hesitate to dirty it with paints and graffiti of very bad taste. "Any action initiated at the Kasbah, notably in the field of restoration, must necessarily be carried out taking into account the riches and historical values of this heritage which contains architectural styles dating back several centuries," stresses a local resident.

It should be remembered that the Kasbah and its mosque, built in 1773 by Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah, are places steeped in history that require particular interest. If the ramparts and the grain stores have resisted the vagaries of time, they are today in a state that requires a thoughtful and adapted restoration that aims to restore this rich heritage to good condition, notably the stability of the old buildings which have a spiritual, cultural and artistic dimension. Hence the need to preserve this asset and promote it to bring these places back to life. The enhancement of the city's heritage, or what remains of it, must encourage public authorities, elected officials, civil society and associations to multiply rehabilitation actions for these buildings that bear witness to the past.

The city of Mohammedia and its heritage need concrete safeguarding actions, in order to give the full measure of their richness and lay, at the same time, the foundations for a harmonious development.
