A new public landfill for 30 million DH

The city of Laâyoune has just acquired a new public landfill for a cost estimated at more than 30 million DH, which will allow for modern, rational, and sustainable management of this vital sector at the city level. This new landfill, located 5 km south-west of the city, extends over more than 7.5 hectares and is expected to treat more than 150 tonnes of household and similar waste per day in Laâyoune, which has a population of approximately 200,000 inhabitants, and provides for the treatment of more than 725 thousand tonnes over 10 years. Equipped with advanced technology for the collection, transport, and treatment of waste, the new controlled public landfill of Laâyoune is intended to be a modern structure designed with a concern for preserving the ecosystem and environmental balances. It will allow for efficient and sustainable management of household waste by adopting modern techniques and international standards in terms of sterilisation and the elimination of bacteria to eliminate unpleasant odours and toxic substances harmful to the health of the populations and the groundwater table in the region. The location of this new landfill was selected by a local commission from different sectors following criteria taking into account the preservation of the environment, the protection of the groundwater table, and the distance from road axes and housing clusters, and it is equipped with various control and management equipment necessary. According to Hamdi Ouled Errachid, the president of the Laâyoune municipal council, this project constitutes an important step participating in the strengthening of the infrastructure necessary for a balanced local economic take-off, and a fundamental stage in the efforts made for the safeguarding of the environment and the implementation of the tools necessary for the revival of the tourism sector in the region. Carried out by the Department of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment and the Ministry of the Interior, this project falls within the framework of the National Household Waste Programme and aims to ensure the collection and cleaning of household waste to reach a collection rate of 90% in 2020, and to achieve controlled landfills for household and similar waste for the benefit of all urban centres (100%) in 2020.
