Foum-Eloued beach, a destination of choice for the Sahrawis

Considered the most important seaside resort in the Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra region, Foum-Eloued beach is, in recent days, the preferred destination for the inhabitants of the city of Laâyoune, estimated at more than 20 thousand, to spend moments of relaxation.

Located 25 km south of the city, this beach experiences a large flow of holidaymakers throughout the year. It constitutes a breath of fresh air for the local inhabitants, given in particular the lack from which the city of Laâyoune suffers in terms of means of entertainment.

Thus, this beach is an opening of Laâyoune onto the Atlantic Ocean and combines the advantages of a beach with fine sand and calm sea, with the captivating landscape of sand dunes along this region, which is sunny all year round. This beach is served by national road No. 1, well maintained despite the challenge of sand encroachment, and offers great tourist potential thanks to its long strips of golden sand allowing for the development of all kinds of activities including sand yachting, surfing, and other water sports.

Its fish-filled waters also whet the appetite of holidaymakers who are fishing enthusiasts to practise their favourite hobby; this seaside resort is called upon to become the engine of local development for seaside tourism.

Each year, this beach manages to obtain the Blue Flag, the granting of which is dependent on compliance with a number of criteria classified into four families: information, awareness and environmental education, bathing water quality, hygiene and safety, and development and management.

Compliance with these criteria is verified during the summer season by the members of a national committee led by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection. This Blue Flag programme was relocated to Morocco in 2005 with a view to raising the level of clean beaches to international standards, thus allowing it to contribute to the development of the Kingdom's seaside tourism. The number of flags awarded has seen a clear evolution, going from 2 beaches in 2005 to 20 for the 2011 summer campaign. This label is managed at the international level by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a network of NGOs from 60 countries, which works to promote and execute environmental awareness and education programmes.
