Asilah: Establishment of tourist routes

Asilah: Establishment of tourist routes

Asilah continues its commitment to highlighting its heritage assets. After successfully completing its major project for the rehabilitation and restoration of its medina, the white city is drawing inspiration from the experience of other destinations, such as Tangier, by adopting a new programme for the establishment and promotion of new intra-muros circuits. Initiated by the League of Tourism Sector Actors of Asilah, this programme - supported by the Asilah municipality, the Tangier delegation of culture, and the Mediterranean Network of Ancient Cities - has just been launched through the installation of the first information signpost (for these tourist routes) near the main gate of the Kasbah. "We want, like other cities, to provide Asilah with tourist circuits that allow its heritage assets to be known. We are mobilised with the support of our partners to succeed in this project, which represents an added value to the tourism sector," indicates Saad Jebari, president of the said League. The inauguration of this first signpost was distinguished by the presentation of the tourist circuits project in its entirety. "The main objective of this project is to encourage cultural tourism in the city," stresses Mr Jebari. It should be noted that this first signpost presents a diagram and a presentation of a new tourist circuit, recently created. This new circuit - which begins at the main gate of the Kasbah - introduces tourists to old buildings surrounded by ancient Portuguese ramparts. Visitors to the city can, for this purpose, start a hike in this fortress to discover the Kamra tower, which was built in 1509 under the orders of King Emmanuel I of Portugal. Distinguished by its medieval architecture, this famous monument stands above other historical buildings, including the Lalla Saïda mosque, built on the remains of an old church. The new tourist circuit allows for the enhancement of other historical sites in Asilah, inherited from an ancient past. These include, among others, the prestigious Raïssouni Palace, created in 1910 and considered the most beautiful architectural work in the city. This new circuit highlights the old gates (Bab Al Homar, Bab Kasbah, Bab Al Bahr, etc.) as well as the old towers of the medina.
