The services of the Department of Maritime Fisheries at the port of Agadir seized last Thursday a very large quantity of pots (about 28,000 units) used for octopus fishing, indicates a communiqué from the Ministry of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries.
This operation is part of the intensive fight against the plundering of the resource and its harmful consequences on fish stocks and marine ecology, through the multiplication of controls at the ports of the Kingdom.
These plastic pots (or canisters), open at both ends and containing cement, are deposited in lines on the seabed to trap the octopus, continues the same source, noting that this practice is prohibited due to its harmfulness to the resource and the marine environment.
Illegal fishing constitutes a real threat to fish stocks, which harms fishing communities for whom this activity is the main source of income.
