A programme to improve the skills of young people

"Advantage Trainer Programme", a project initiated by the British Council which aims at the integration of young people from the Souss-Massa and Marrakech-Safi regions, has just been launched in Agadir.

The British Council recently launched a skills development initiative "Advantage Trainer Programme" in Morocco, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The goal of this initiative is to increase the employability and integration of young people from the Souss-Massa and Marrakech-Safi regions. The programme essentially aims, on the one hand, to help young people acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to enter the labour market and, on the other hand, to improve the chances of flourishing for disadvantaged communities and individuals, through the promotion of intercultural dialogue, social development through the community and the knowledge necessary for social change.

For the year 2015-2016, the programme will work to improve the skills of 20 trainers from youth centres, vocational training centres for women and partner NGOs, whether in terms of content, programmes or methods required to provide integrated services for social skills and employability support.

During the second phase, the trainers will contribute positively to the socio-economic evolution of their own communities by supporting and training a group of 700 marginalised young men and women, aged 18 to 29. The workshops help young people improve their personal and social skills with a view to better enabling them to identify problems and advocate for changes in their communities. "This initiative will help young people in both regions to become more active citizens and community leaders and prepare them to successfully launch their own income-generating activities, strengthen institutions and ensure the conditions necessary for economic growth", indicates a statement from the British Council.

It should be noted that the new programme is based on the success of the award-winning international skills partnership, which was signed between institutions in the United Kingdom and Morocco. This programme has produced trainees better equipped for the workplace, in line with international standards, for the benefit of the vulnerable young population of Morocco and the United Kingdom. The programme also aims to create an innovative and effective approach to reintegration, so as to offer a model that can be replicated in all institutions in Morocco and which supports young people from vulnerable backgrounds and encourages them to undertake income-generating activities.
