End of the conflict: Conversion of the port of Agadir into a marina and cruise port

End of the conflict opposing the project leaders for the conversion of the port of Agadir into a marina and cruise port to maritime fishing professionals and other regional officials. The port of Agadir will certainly experience development within the framework of the National Port Strategy by 2030 but without relocating the economic activities linked to fishing. The response comes from the Minister of Transport, Equipment, and Logistics, Aziz Rabbah, who chaired a presentation day of said Strategy in its national and regional dimension in Agadir on May 19. The port will certainly see a strengthening in terms of infrastructure, logistics, and development of quays dedicated to cruise ships and spaces reserved for tourist transport vehicles but without relocating the fishing activity. Let us underline that the National Ports Agency has planned the mobilisation of a budget of approximately 4 billion dirhams with a view to expanding the port of the city of Agadir by 2030. Growth requires it. The city's port activity records an annual increase of 7%. A first extension is therefore expected. It involves an enlargement of the surface area dedicated to containers. The development proposals for this port also provide for the creation of a new hydrocarbon station (3 million tonnes), the relocation of the shipyard, and the creation of a new era for cruise tourism. Said presentation thus highlighted the two possibilities for expanding the current port as well as the creation of a new one at Cap Ghir with the redeployment of the Agadir one. The Strategy provides in this sense and taking into account the capacities still available for trade, that these can be valorised and optimised to serve a large regional hinterland. The port will also see a relocation of its oil terminal to receive 60,000 DWT tankers and two quay extensions for containers and bulk cargo. Furthermore, fishing and its associated services, notably ship repair, benefit from a reorganisation of spaces thanks to an external (central) extension. An external cruise terminal will be built to the South-West near the marina and the tourist zone. This new figure will make it possible to increase the total annual trade traffic from 16 MT by 2030. The president of the SMD region, Brahim Hafidi, raised the importance of having to adapt this strategy to the new challenges that the region is experiencing in terms of water scarcity and problems linked to these three classic pillar sectors. For his part, the president of the urban commune of Agadir, Tariq Kabbage, insisted on the importance of taking into consideration during the study phase of this Strategy the phenomenon of erosion and the harmonisation of it with the city's master plan. The parliamentarian Saadia Lbahi, from the socialist group, recalled on this occasion the importance of taking into consideration in this development plan the improvement of working conditions and the skills of human resources. This meeting also saw the presentation of a file of grievances from the professionals of the Chambers of the region by the president, Said Dor, of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Agadir to the minister. The requests presented focused on five points linked to the weakness of infrastructure, logistics supply, the supervision of joint projects, the strengthening of the place of this port in its national and African sphere as well as the consolidation of reception and tourist transport infrastructure at the level of the port of Agadir.
