Zagora – About sixty women, Moroccan and foreign, are taking part in the 11th edition of the sporting and solidarity race “Trek des Gazelles”, aimed at supporting children with cancer.
Reserved for women in search of adventure and an enriching encounter with themselves and other women from different backgrounds, this trek offers participants, from February 02 to 08, a total immersion in the magical wide-open spaces of the desert, valleys, and majestic mountains of the Drâa-Tafilalet region.
According to the organisers, the participants are expected to cover 100 km on foot, i.e., six to eight hours of walking per day between the provinces of Zagora, Ouarzazate, and Tata, in an atmosphere filled with pleasure and adventure in the middle of the desert and mountains.
“It is about bringing together women, true leaders of the fight, on a hike of the heart to support children sick with cancer, and thus join an essential cause, that of the fight against paediatric cancer”, they said.
In a statement to MAP, MĂ©lanie Salgues, founder and organiser of the ” Trek fĂ©minin des Gazelles”, indicated that this edition includes the scheduling of four stages that take participants on a fascinating journey into the heart of a region in Morocco rich in cultures and contrasting natural landscapes.
Beyond the sporting competition, this edition takes on a social dimension through support for the efforts made to fight cancer in children in Morocco and sub-Saharan countries, she said, expressing her thanks to the local authorities for the efforts made to ensure the smooth running of the event.
Through this event, the organisers aim to contribute to medical research efforts focusing on the fight against childhood cancer, to provide anti-cancer treatments, and to support the creation of more reception units for children suffering from this disease.
