A press release from the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity explained that this campaign is part of the launch of the annual activities for the local medical campaign programme, which aims to facilitate access to basic healthcare in remote areas and provide specialised surgical services.
This initiative is part of the support for the health services provided by the mobile medical units – Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity for telemedicine, which has been operational since November 2023. This campaign targets the populations of the Fezouata and Taghbalt communes, whose cases were diagnosed during their medical follow-up at the Tinfou El Berrania and Ait Mnad units.
During this solidarity operation, the Foundation will cover 150 cataract surgeries, giving many patients the chance to recover their sight and improve their quality of life.
To this end, the Foundation has mobilised significant logistical resources placed at the site of the mobile medical unit – Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity in Tinfou El Berrania, located 42 km from the city of Zagora, including two surgical units, an ophthalmology examination unit, a medical analysis unit, and a pharmacy, as well as the equipment of the Tinfou El Berrania unit to ensure a medical pathway that respects safety and quality standards.
This campaign is conducted in two phases: a preliminary phase where the necessary examinations, such as ophthalmological consultations and medical analyses, are carried out to verify the health status of the patients and ensure their suitability for surgery; and a second phase where the cataract surgery is performed. To facilitate the beneficiaries' access to the campaign site, local authorities have mobilised transport for the residents of the neighbouring Douars.
To ensure the quality of care and support, significant human resources consisting of 50 people have been mobilised, including doctors, social workers, and the Foundation's logistics team, in addition to volunteer specialist doctors from the Moroccan Medical Solidarity Association, including ophthalmologists and specialists in anaesthesia and ophthalmic surgery.
The association also provides logistical support by supplying two ophthalmic surgery units consisting of four operating theatres.
The implementation of this solidarity campaign relies on close cooperation between the Foundation, local authorities, the Provincial Delegation of Health and Social Protection, and the Moroccan Medical Solidarity Association, ensuring optimal care for cases and effective coordination on the ground.
It should be noted that during 2024, the Foundation organised four medical campaigns for cataract surgery in the provinces of Amizmiz, Chichaoua, Sefrou, and Boulemane, which allowed for the execution of 398 surgical interventions and 833 ophthalmological consultations.
The Foundation also supported the organisation of 3 multidisciplinary caravans and others for cataract surgery, carried out by partner medical associations in the provinces of Tan-Tan, Tetouan, and Benslimane. These caravans enabled 136 surgical interventions, 320 ophthalmological consultations, and 2,606 multidisciplinary care services.
These achievements represent the Foundation's ongoing commitment to bringing healthcare closer to needy people in rural areas and improving their health conditions.
