Tinghir is a town in central-eastern Morocco, in the Souss-Massa-Drâa region, located in the Todgha valley, at the exit of the High Atlas and facing the Jbel Saghro. It has been the capital of the Tinghir province since its creation in 2009, having previously been part of the Ouarzazate province. Its name comes from the Tamazight 'tin ghir', the place (tin) of the mountain (ighir, shoulder or ridge). The town itself (Tinghir municipality) has 36,000 inhabitants, while the oasis as a whole totals 86,500 inhabitants according to the 2004 census. Tineghir, like its region, is populated mainly by Amazighs (Berbers).
