The 2nd edition of the environmental exhibition on plastic waste at sea will be held from 20 February to 20 April in Tétouan, under the theme "The sea, the final destination?", at the initiative of the Association of Life and Earth Sciences Teachers (AESVT) of Morocco.
This awareness-raising event, organised in collaboration with national and international associative actors, aims to protect the natural marine heritage and to advocate for a more responsible use of plastic in daily life, states a press release from the Association. This edition thus aims to shed light on the role of cultural heritage in environmental protection and the alternatives presented by the Moroccan artisan in terms of various products that could replace plastic or advocate for a reasonable and responsible use of this material, according to a sustainable development approach.
Also, an important educational and scientific programme will be dedicated to schoolchildren, middle school students, high school students, university students, and the general public, in addition to the organisation of workshops that will debate good practices for the use of plastic and the fight against plastic waste in the marine environment.
This event, unique in its kind in Morocco, is part of an ambitious international project initiated by the Swiss Drosos Foundation and the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich around the issue of ocean pollution by plastic waste, which has been replicated in 4 Arab countries, namely Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan. The first edition of this exhibition was organised in Casablanca and benefited 8,000 people and associations from different backgrounds.
Furthermore, a massive campaign for the collection of marine plastic waste at the national level was launched in April 2014, through the mobilisation of more than 6,000 students and local actors, 200 schools and environmental clubs, and 15 sections of AESVT Morocco across 30 beaches and coastal cities.
