The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) proceeded, on Tuesday 31 December 2024, to the commissioning of a structuring project aimed at strengthening the production and distribution system of drinking water for the city of Taounate and surrounding communes from the Sahla dam water treatment plant.
With a total cost of 92 million dirhams (MDH), this project is financed by ONEE through a joint loan from the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KFW) Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Office indicates in a press release.
This project consists of the extension and equipment of raw and treated water pumping stations, the extension and equipment of the drinking water treatment plant with an additional flow of 8,640 m³ per day, the reinforcement of raw and treated water supply lines through the laying of pipes with a diameter of 400 mm over a length of 9,800 linear metres, the construction of two drinking water reservoirs with a capacity of 800 m³ and 500 m³, as well as the reinforcement of the power line, it is specified.
It will allow the production capacity of the treatment plant to be increased to 12,960 m³ per day and the overall drinking water storage capacity to 3,350 m³ in the city of Taounate, reports MAP.
This project, which is part of the National Programme for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation (PNAEPI) 2020-2027, the convention for which was signed on 13 January 2020 before His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, will satisfy the drinking water needs of the city of Taounate and surrounding communes by 2030, benefiting a total population of more than 149,000 inhabitants, notes the same source.
It will also contribute to improving the living conditions of the beneficiary populations and to supporting the socio-economic development of this region as well as the effective management of its water resources.
