Since the start of the ASAT industrial unit for fish canning near the Nahda district in Tan Tan, its inhabitants have been organising protest marches against this industrial unit which overwhelms them with its wastewater and suffocating odours. Already, in February of last year, the foul-smelling waters coming from this factory had flooded the district to the point where the inhabitants, to get around, were forced to put down makeshift fords of stones or pieces of plank to avoid wading through stinking mud. The cries of alarm from the inhabitants of this district have never been heard and no city official has travelled to see the misfortune of these left-behind people. The director of the said factory, having one day been confronted by the inhabitants, entered into negotiations with them in the presence of the local director of the ONEP and representatives of several associations from other districts. During this meeting, which took place in the presence of the representative of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights, the inhabitants of the Nahda district, who are the most exposed to the harmful effects of this factory, declared that the factory does not respect any hygiene rule supposed to be applied by an industrial unit located in the middle of a residential district. They asked the director to take measures to eradicate these unbearable nuisances. The official concerned was content to listen to their grievances and leave without providing an answer.
Today, the situation in this district is only getting worse; the local or municipal authorities who are at the origin of the establishment of this unit in this district remain indifferent to this problem. The inhabitants find themselves obliged to write to the Head of Government to ask him to intervene to alleviate their suffering.
This is how the local office of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights writes about this: "Realising the suffering of the inhabitants and the danger that this unit represents for their health, which is deteriorating day by day, we hold the Head of Government responsible for this inevitable catastrophe".
