Four years ago, the bloody events of Sidi Ifni broke out.
These events against a backdrop of social malaise had, as we remember, cost the Qatari satellite channel Al Jazeera the closure of its Rabat office and the hearing of its representative in Morocco by the justice system.
Even if, at the time, precarious solutions had been found to mitigate the popular anger that had shaken Sidi Ifni and the Ait Baamrane region, the evil persisted and the calm remained very fragile. This is what the authorities had to observe, on Sunday 25 March. It only took the arrest of a young man to turn the city upside down. Everything started with clashes, on Saturday evening, in front of a police station in the city. These clashes degenerated into stone-throwing and the setting on fire of tyres and other rubber objects, causing the cordoning off of several areas of the city by the security forces.
The reason is essentially the arrest and hunger strike of the 20 February activist, Yasser Naji. Previously and during the course of last week, a sit-in had been announced, by social networks, to denounce "police torture", according to the terms of the demonstrators.
However, the cordoning off of the main axes and sites of the city accelerated everything. Indeed, according to witnesses, "the roads leading to Tiznit and Guelmim were blocked, prohibiting any movement from or to the city for buses and cars for more than a day" in order to avoid the spread of clashes in the neighbouring villages, without a doubt to express their solidarity with the demonstrators as was the case during the events of Beni Bouayach, a few weeks ago.
Yasser Naji's family does not intend to stop there and intends to continue its protests started since 23 March. According to these same witnesses, "the detainee's family as well as his sympathisers travelled through the city passing in front of a school chanting slogans to ask the police to facilitate his release". Note that Yasser Naji was arrested on Friday 23 March, following a demonstration and was referred to the King's prosecutor.
