The historic city will finally have its cultural complex

A cultural complex will soon be born in the city of Sefrou, at the initiative of the supervisory ministry in partnership with the urban commune.

The urban commune of Sefrou, in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, is currently working on the project to build a cultural complex in Sefrou. By virtue of a partnership agreement, the Municipal Council of Sefrou has committed to providing the Ministry of Culture with a plot of land with an area of 3 hectares, free of any legal constraints, for the realisation of this project, which has been long-awaited by the cultural, artistic, and associative circles of the pretty mountain town. According to the regional director of the Ministry of Culture in Fez, Lachen Charfi, a budget of 8 million DH will be devoted in 2016 to technical studies and the structural work of this future cultural complex, which will be built according to the required standards and the specific architectural character of the city.

This future complex will include, he specifies, a multi-purpose hall with 500 seats that can be used for performances (theatre, concerts, film screenings, etc.), a reading space with a library, a fine arts gallery, a conference room, an administrative pavilion, and a sanitary block, in addition to other necessary outbuildings and facilities. Once the project is completed, the Ministry of Culture will contribute to the equipment of this cultural and artistic complex, thus bringing the total cost of its realisation to more than 10 million DH. This future complex will constitute a determining factor in the revitalisation of the various cultural, artistic, and associative activities of Sefrou, a province that falls under the Fez-Meknes region. The historic city of Sefrou constitutes an ancestral home where Hebrew, Amazigh, and Arab communities coexisted in perfect symbiosis. According to historians, the city of Sefrou is older than its neighbour Fez, the Idrissid city and spiritual capital of the Kingdom. Located at the foot of the Middle Atlas mountains, Sefrou is famous for its historical remains including the Mellah, or Jewish quarter, its gates and walls, its waterfall on the Oued Aggay, and the surrounding lakes. It is also renowned for its annual Cherry Festival, which it has been celebrating since 1920 and which has been classified as intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO.
