“Medersa”, a new think tank is born in Salé

“Medersa”, a new think tank is born in Salé

The national scene of think tanks has been enriched with the creation, recently in Salé, of a new think tank called “Medersa”. The young think tank draws its name from the “Merinid Medersa” which constituted, for centuries, the minaret of science in the city. The choice of this name is intended as a contribution by the eleven young founders of this think tank, including four women, all under 30 years old, to the rehabilitation of the city's secular history and its reconciliation with its scientific heritage. Through this think tank, the founders aim to contribute in an innovative way to the development of their city and, by extension, of Morocco, through the popularisation of research and opinions in the fields of geopolitics, economics, and development. “Concerned, as young people from Salé, to contribute to the development of the city and to the defence of the supreme interests of the nation, we chose at the beginning to express ourselves through political parties. However, we found that this space is not appropriate to express our concerns and convictions in a scientific manner,” explained the president of the centre, Mehdi Sbaï. “This idea of creating a think tank in the city went back two years. We decided to create this independent centre which brings together young expertise to accompany and analyse current events by adopting a scientific approach far from any political calculation,” he added. “The idea aroused the encouragement and support of the notables of the city to whom we explained our approach,” he noted, adding that the initiative also had a favourable echo among the young people of the city both in Morocco and abroad. According to the presentation note, the young think tank aspires to the organisation of national and international meetings and exhibitions to promote the exchange of ideas and opinions in the fields of geopolitics, economics, and development, to contribute to the popularisation, enhancement, and influence of scientific research, and to the evaluation of general policy and the analysis of the results of various initiatives. The centre also aims to supervise studies to develop proposals relating to the consecration of good governance and the realisation of sustainable development. If think tanks, particularly in the pilot Anglo-Saxon experience in the matter, are often composed of experts, researchers, and renowned specialists, the “Medersa” experience is distinguished by the young age of its founding members, who have a recent career certainly but have benefited from a diversified academic training (economics, engineering, media). Mr. Sbaï explained in this sense that this particularity constitutes a strong point of this new experience, underlining, in passing, that the members of the centre are not closed in on themselves and aim first and foremost to be close to the ordinary citizen and their concerns. He noted that the members of the think tank all have a solid academic background, noting, to this effect, that this experience will be supervised by university professors, in particular from the Faculty of Legal, Economic and Social Sciences of Salé. Evoking the centre's annual programme, Mr. Sbaï made it known that the think tank will proceed with the publication of a bulletin and the organisation of a series of scientific conferences around current topics concerning the city and the Kingdom, such as youth unemployment, the reform of the Compensation Fund, and Morocco's relations with Arab and African countries. The centre also aspires to the organisation in Salé of a major forum on Africa next October, he noted, adding that its members are working on finalising a strategy for the promotion of this project to institutions likely to sponsor it.
