A city that must change its name. This is the wish of four associations working in the Ribat El Kheir region, under the Sefrou province. A petition is circulating on this subject to collect the signatures of the inhabitants. Indeed, the initiators of this petition want above all for the small town located in the pre-Rif to regain its old name, which was changed in the early 70s without consultation with the population. "... The name Ahermoumou is more present than ever in memories and common language, with the imposed name being reserved only for administrative needs," highlights a press release made public by four associations, namely the Bouiblane Association for Culture and Development, the Idil Association for Environment and Development, the Youth House Council Association, and the Bouiblane Sports Union Association.
The inhabitants of the region have always wondered about "the crime they committed" to strip their village of its name inherited from their ancestors, which they consider an integral part of their Arab and Amazigh cultural identity, and what curse has struck them to deserve "such a punishment".
The inhabitants of Ahermoumou were not involved in any way in the events of July 1971. That is a fact. The closure of the military school just after the event of July 10 threw a good number of small traders and day labourers onto the street. It is an economic hell into which the region has entered since that date.
In reality, of "Ribat El Kheir: Fort of Abundance," the press release clarifies, "the inhabitants have seen only misery and marginalisation. Any development project concerning this region, when it exists, is doomed to be forgotten in the drawers of the concerned ministries." The main demand therefore remains "the lifting of all regional or central discriminatory measures concerning the fair and equitable distribution of socio-economic development projects relating to this part of Morocco."
