Developing a national system of cultural statistics to highlight the cultural richness of Morocco and its symbols, its heritage, and its diversity, such is the objective of the international symposium on the "National System of Cultural Statistics", organised on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at the National Library of Rabat. This symposium, which lasted two days, was marked by the presence of academics and national and international experts in this field, focusing notably on international thematic experiences in cultural statistics and national experiences in the collection and processing of cultural information. In his speech, the Minister of Culture, Amine Sbihi, called for the implementation of a strong and coherent system, stressing the importance of addressing the shortcomings and dysfunctions affecting the production of statistics in the cultural field. These main shortcomings relate to the capture and processing of statistical data on artistic activities, cultural products, and heritage. On the one hand, data collection is not governed by an appropriate legal framework. On the other hand, the production of statistical information is carried out outside any specialised conceptual framework, and finally, the dissemination of this data is not centralised. In this sense, the representative of the UNESCO Office in Rabat, Michael Millward, highlighted the importance of designing a reliable statistical system to promote cultural richness. Likewise, he recalled that UNESCO has made a guide dealing with this theme available to countries wishing to take stock of their cultural statistics and to enhance their foundations. It should be noted that the Ministry of Culture has set up a unit dedicated to the development of the National System of Cultural Statistics in Morocco. This work aims to further strengthen cultural governance. Thus, cultural statistics will make it possible to evaluate the ministry's sectoral cultural policy on the basis of reliable data and indicators, to provide stakeholders in the sector with a useful database for decision-making, and to inform the public about the reality of the sector and its vitality.
