The animal collection at the Rabat Zoological Garden has recently been enriched with several species, including 6 crocodiles and 3 giraffes, coming notably from the Pal Zoo in France, the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, and the Emmen Zoo in the Netherlands. This operation was carried out at the end of last April with the aim of enriching the Rabat zoo's animal collection and renewing its presentation of Moroccan, Saharan, and African fauna, the Rabat Zoological Garden indicated on Monday in a press release. It thus allows the zoo to position itself not only as a leisure facility for the general public but also as an institution for the conservation of endangered animal species. The press release added that the operation is part of a European exchange programme coordinated by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria committee, which validated the transfer of these animal species to Morocco, given the compliance of the reception and presentation structures and the respect for safety and management standards for the animal collection. With these various acquisitions and other births, the number of animals housed at the Rabat zoo has increased from 1,200 in 2012 to 1,750 in 2014, representing more than 130 African animal species.
