9th International Piano Competition HRH Princess Lalla Meryem

The Association Les Amitiés Musicales (AMM) is organising, from 1 to 8 July in Rabat, the 9th edition of the International Piano Competition HRH Princess Lalla Meryem.

This edition will be marked by the triple tribute that will be paid to three great composers: Albéniz, Chopin, and Schumann, indicates a press release from the AMM on Wednesday.

The competition rounds and the inaugural concert will take place at the Salle Bahnini of the Ministry of Culture, while the closing ceremony will take place at the Mohammed V National Theatre, specifies the same source.

Since 1994, the date of the competition's creation, the members of the Association Les Amitiés Musicales, with the support of various partners, have been acting with the aim of achieving a common goal: to make a modest contribution to the piano training of young people, underlines the press release.

It is thanks to significant participation from candidates since the creation of the competition (more than 2,000) and the judgements provided by very professional juries, approximately 70 renowned pianists, that the competitions have allowed for the discovery of numerous talents (more than 1,000 laureates), the most deserving of whom have been encouraged by the granting of Prizes (more than 500 Prizes), advanced training scholarships, concerts, and rewards at the end of the rounds.

However, despite this constantly growing success, the Competition must not turn away from one of its main specificities, which has always been to promote a qualitative level rather than massive participation.

The musical maturity required to present oneself to this type of international competition assumes several years of serious piano practice as well as a musical culture allowing for the understanding and realisation of the proposed repertoire works.

The ninth edition of the Competition will include modifications regarding the minimum and maximum ages of the candidates (10 years-30 years) and the configuration of the degrees with new age limits.

Through these modifications, the International Piano Competition HRH Princess Lalla Meryem will grant particular attention to the age groups that demonstrate a lot of assiduity and sacrifice to continue to practise the art of the piano with rigour, passion, and respect.
