Oujda – The top-performing students were awarded on Saturday evening in Oujda during the 8th edition of the Holy Quran memorisation and recitation competition, organised for Muslim students from sub-Saharan African countries on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.
Prizes and certificates of merit were distributed to the winners during a collective Iftar held in honour of the students participating in this competition, which is organised by the Association of Foreign Muslim Students in partnership with the Regional Council of Ulema of the Oriental, and in coordination with the Oujda Centre for Human and Social Studies and Research.
The event, held under the theme “Ramadan, month of the Quran”, saw the participation of 52 contestants representing 19 sub-Saharan African countries, who are pursuing their higher education at universities and institutes in several Moroccan cities (Oujda, Nador, Meknes, Fez, Sale, Rabat, Casablanca, El Jadida, Kenitra, and Tangier).
This Quranic competition, which has become an annual event, aims to encourage foreign Muslim students to memorise and recite the Holy Quran, to deepen their contemplation of its meanings, in addition to strengthening spiritual security and the values of moderation and tolerance, as well as strengthening fraternal ties between young Muslims, thereby enhancing the bonds of acquaintance and solidarity between peoples.
In a speech on the occasion, the President of the Regional Council of Ulema of the Oriental, Mustapha Benhamza, emphasised the importance of this annual tradition that celebrates those who memorise the Book of God among students from sub-Saharan African countries, highlighting the efforts made by Morocco to encourage Quran memorisation and the teaching of its sciences by providing Quranic schools, teachers, and guides who oversee religious supervision.
Mr. Benhamza stressed the importance of spreading the values of tolerance, moderation, and acceptance of others, highlighting that when young Muslims live in a sound educational and spiritual atmosphere, they are qualified to help build a cohesive society.
For his part, the President of the Union of Foreign Muslim Students in Oujda, Almou Isaac Nouri, indicated in a statement to the Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP) agency that this event is an opportunity to strengthen spiritual security among foreign Muslim students from sub-Saharan countries, praising the support provided by the Regional Council of Ulema to this event, which reflects its special care for those who memorise the Holy Quran.
For her part, the head of communication and public relations at the Oujda Centre for Human and Social Studies and Research, and member of the organising committee, Yamina Oufkir, highlighted the importance of this initiative in consolidating cultural and religious ties between sub-Saharan African students who pursue their studies in Morocco.
