Jamaâ El-Fna square gets a new look

Jamaâ El-Fna square gets a new look

The famous square that embodies the ochre city has just undergone a makeover that does not go unnoticed. Enough to seduce even more followers of oral and intangible heritage.

The iconic Jamaâ El-Fna square, the beating heart of Marrakech and a famous esplanade renowned for its daily effervescence and multiple spontaneous performances, has just redone its look to commemorate with pomp the fourteenth anniversary of its proclamation as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, as well as to seduce even more and expand the circle of its "lovers". Indeed, like a beautiful girl preparing for her sumptuous wedding, this mythical square of discreet beauty has just acquired new structures with a view to ensuring more comfort and well-being for its visitors. These installations are part of a redevelopment project for this high cultural place led jointly by the City Council and the Wilaya. Thus, 63 catering stands have been completely renovated.

The new furniture notably includes more spacious tables, more comfortable seats, hand-wash basins, and other facilities intended to improve hygiene conditions. Contacted by the newspaper "Le Matin", the president of the Association of Restaurateurs of Jamaâ El-Fna, M’Barek Bemdich, made it known that the renovation operation was entirely taken care of by the owners of the food stalls, who paid the sum of 35,000 DH each, and that other facilities will see the light of day soon with funding this time from the City Council and the Wilaya. This restructuring operation has brought a batch of novelties, including the introduction of a unified model of restaurants which are now fixed. "Previously, the owners of the food stalls lost a lot of time and money packing up the stand and the kitchens every evening," rejoiced M’Barek Bemdich. To celebrate the event as it should be and give more brilliance to the inauguration ceremony of these structures, several personalities made the trip, including the Wali of the Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz region, Abdeslam Bikrate, and the mayor, Fatima-Ezzahra El Mansouri.
