Women in the spotlight at the 48th Marrakech National Festival of Popular Arts from July 17 to 21
Women in the spotlight in Marrakech

The 48th National Festival of Popular Arts will be organised, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, from July 17 to 21 under the theme "Women and Popular Arts". Since its creation in 1960, the FNAP has been part of a dynamic of conservation, promotion, and transmission of Morocco's intangible heritage, represented by its popular and traditional arts (its music, dances, crafts, and local products), by offering a platform for expression, meetings, and exchanges, the organisers indicate in a press release. The Marrakech Festival Foundation presents a rich and diverse programme, while respecting the festival's editorial line. Thus, enthusiasts of popular arts come together who, despite their own specificities, can find a common language and shared interests, the same source continues. The show at the Badiâ Palace will revolve around the theme of the 48th edition of the Festival, the organisers promise, adding that during this edition, the FNAP will take place in two essential venues in the city of Marrakech. The Badiâ Palace, a sumptuous monument built during the Saadian reign, will host a show for five days represented by 21 troupes from all four corners of the country, counting nearly 300 artists. The best of traditional Moroccan music will be on the programme, such as the women of Ahouach Tafraout, the Aissawa troupe of Meknes, the Gnaoua troupe of Marrakech, the Guedra troupe of Guelmim, and the Ahwach Haha troupe of Tamanar, coming from the Essaouira region. This show will be punctuated by appearances and speeches by the famous Moroccan actress Zineb Smaiki, who will come to pay tribute to women and recall their major role in terms of popular arts and traditions. Thus, it restores the palace space to its former grandeur and prestige, and offers a unique setting for artists and the public. Finally, in this context, Morocco's tangible and intangible cultural heritage will become one for the duration of the festival. From July 17 to 21, performances will begin at the Badii Palace from 10:30 p.m. The Royal Theatre, whose outdoor stage architecture recalls the theatres of Ancient Greece, will host more than 10 groups of the most talented musicians, coming from all regions of the Kingdom and the world. It is in this atypical venue that the public is invited to listen to the most diverse musical styles, ranging from the Rif to the Moroccan Sahara, and from the Souss valley to the Atlas Mountains, passing through other regions of the globe. The public will also have the opportunity to appreciate the sounds of Aïta Jeblia groups like Chama Zaz, the Amazigh melodies of Rayssa Fatima Tachkoutk, or to attend the concert of the Korean group "The Gwandae", and that of the Estefan Cuevas Flamenco Company or the Barbès National Orchestra, the latter organised in partnership with the French Institute of Marrakech. Performances will take place from July 18 to 21, starting at 10:00 p.m.
