As usual, at this same time of year, people have no other subject of discussion than the heatwaves that the country is experiencing, and the cities of the South in particular. Despite the heatwave, which reaches high temperatures, Marrakech does not empty. Everyone or almost everyone, especially those who visit it occasionally, talk about a Marrakech by night reserved for the wealthy class who meet there during this period. But by enchantment, those who know the city of the seven saints well know that this is not true, and that the city that our fathers knew is still there.
With the repetitive heatwaves of recent weeks, the Marrakchis, but also the visitors, whether national or foreign, especially at night, leave their houses for a breath of air under the stars. Old and young, men and women, all know that this breath, one can savour it only on Boulevard Mohammed VI, formerly known as "Avenue de France". Those who remember this avenue during the 80s and 90s will discover with pleasure that it is still what it was ten or twenty years ago, with the exception of the surrounding infrastructure which has obviously followed the times. A sexagenarian, a real fan of the place, confides: "Since I was young, I often spent my summer evenings here. It's an atmosphere that I don't find anywhere else and I am very happy to see that my sons and grandsons have made the same choice". Yes, Boulevard Mohammed VI is, as the Marrakchis like to call it, the beach of Marrakech. In recent weeks, this green space par excellence has become the unmissable meeting place for all those who are looking for a little fresh air, because inside the houses, the heat is suffocating. Every evening, from 8 p.m., the boulevard begins to take shape, first by those who have to return a little early, then by those who intend to stay longer. As for entertainment, we are entitled to a whole range. Some are content to walk along the boulevard, chatting, humming, or even dreaming of a possible ideal life for two. Others prefer to play cards, shout at every cheat, laugh, or tease the losers at the end of each game, going from time to time to look for bottles of lemonade, the only bet in this kind of game. Or even, but a little later, those who decide to dine on the spot and who bring a local "tanjia", a source of envy for passers-by who cannot help but take a look, or sometimes a small word to get invited, which is not impossible on Boulevard Mohammed VI. In this regard, a mother confided: "Eating in the middle of people sometimes seems embarrassing, that's what some say, but when it's a practice that you inherit from father to son, you can't do anything about it and you even find it normal". As for entertainment, if nothing or almost nothing is programmed in advance, the young, and sometimes even the less young, do not deprive themselves of giving these nocturnal picnics a rather particular charm, because, as some Bahjaouis say, "there is nothing better for pleasure than what is not programmed". These small musical groups, which are created for the occasion, attract a huge number of people to such an extent that sometimes, even tired, the "artists" can no longer stop, so much are they solicited by the public. If all this is pleasant to experience during these evenings on Boulevard Mohammed VI, what is more so are all these perfumes that one can smell during this night walk, perfumes of flowers that do not fade completely despite the heat of the day, smells of spices that emerge from these dishes brought to be tasted and eaten under the stars, perfumes of grass, water, and everything that nature has given and known how to protect despite the daily presence of these thousands of visitors who, night after night, continue to indulge in these night walks.
