New design for the tourist circuit in Marrakech: Craftsmanship and artisans in the spotlight

The Ministry of Craftsmanship, in collaboration with the Agency for Partnership for Progress (APP) and with the support of local authorities and elected officials, organised a kick-off workshop last Tuesday marking the official launch of the project for the "creation and promotion of tourist circuits integrating craftsmanship" in Marrakech. Part of a programme funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and executed by the Department of Craftsmanship, this project aims to strengthen the image of the Medina as an exceptional attraction for the city's cultural destination. It consists, on the one hand, of installing signage panels designed to explain, interpret, and guide visitors throughout the tourist circuits, and on the other, of promoting artisanal products. During his speech, the Minister of Craftsmanship highlighted the importance of craftsmanship and the diversity of products in the fields of culture, tourism, and the economy, and consequently its impact on society in general and artisans in particular. The Minister also discussed the installation of the signage panels and their roles, noting that they will serve to promote the artisanal sector and cultural tourism. These panels, in several languages, as modern information tools, will allow visitors to discover tourist products other than the Jamaâ El Fna square and the most famous historical monuments. For his part, the Wali of Marrakech explained that this project, which is part of human development, will be an opportunity to create jobs, and to develop and market artisanal products. The multiplication of efforts by all stakeholders and their full involvement are necessary for better performance, he stressed. Taking the floor, the project manager presented a brief history to explain that this project is the result of a study recommended by the Secretariat of State for Craftsmanship, which aimed to identify the needs of artisans and small and medium-sized craft enterprises in Marrakech, and that the objective is to highlight the cultural heritage of the Medina and the craft production districts, increase the income of artisans, strengthen tourist animation, and distribute the flow of tourists throughout the city. As for the circuits concerned by the promotion, there are five of them, as follows: "A Thousand and One Expressions of the Art of Earth", "On the Road to the Babouche", "The Art of Wood or the Genius of Master Artisans", "Marrakech Stitch by Stitch", and "Mosaics of Colours with Zellige Artisans".
