A workshop by the Living Planet Morocco association in Ifrane
The Living Planet Morocco (LPM) association and the Province of Ifrane organized a workshop from December 26 to 28 on the theme "Strengthening urban resilience and sustainable management of wetlands in the city of Ifrane".
This workshop, organized as part of the "Resilience" project with the support of the French Development Agency (AFD) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) France, brought together about 25 participants, including institutional representatives, nature protection experts, local associations, and key players in sustainable development.
The city of Ifrane, recently labelled "Wetland City" by the Ramsar Convention, was at the centre of the discussions of this workshop, indicates a press release from the organizers.
"This prestigious title reflects the city's exceptional commitment to the preservation of its unique ecosystems, and in particular its wetlands," notes the same source, adding that this pioneering role will serve as an example for other Moroccan territories and beyond.
"This event marks an important step in our collective commitment to building resilient and sustainable cities in Morocco. Ifrane is a living example of the benefits that Nature-based Solutions can bring to local communities and the environment," declared the Head of the Freshwater Programme of Living Planet Morocco, Oussama Belloulid, quoted in the press release.
This workshop aimed to strengthen the capacities of local and institutional actors in the implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), promote collaboration between stakeholders for sustainable management of wetlands, develop concrete actions to integrate NbS into local strategies, and promote local initiatives already implemented, notably by the Sebou Water Fund.
During three days, participants benefited from training sessions on the concept of sustainable cities and the integration of NbS, interactive workshops to develop mobilization plans for local actors, and meetings and field visits to explore the ecological and ecotourism potential of Ifrane.
The highlight of the event was the visit to Lake Zerrouka, an iconic site, where participants shared their experiences and exchanged best practices for urban resilience and sustainability.
