The councilors of the Federation of the Democratic Left (FGD) at the Figuig communal council have submitted a collective resignation to protest against "marginalization, exclusion, and the absence of any will to respond positively to the legitimate demands of the inhabitants of the Figuig oasis".
In a statement, the political bureau of the Federation of the Democratic Left party declared that this collective resignation comes in a context marked by the worsening of the crisis that the oasis is going through, due to "the stubbornness of the authorities and the spirit of retaliation targeting the population for its refusal to cede the waters of the oasis, its engagement in a protest movement for more than a year, as well as its massive vote in favor of the FGD candidates during the last partial elections, a ballot that constituted a popular referendum against the legitimacy of this cession".
The party estimated that "the absence of solutions for the problem of quarries, the worsening situation of truck drivers despite the economic and social consequences of this arbitrary decision, the deprivation of the Figuig oasis of the budget dedicated to regions affected by the floods that hit the southeast, as well as the absence of signs testifying to a real will to end the marginalization of the inhabitants and to guarantee their rights by finding solutions to the accumulated problems, demonstrate this punitive approach".
In this sense, the party demanded "the opening of a serious and responsible dialogue with the resigning representatives of the population and with the representatives of the protest movement, with a view to finding real solutions to the crises that the oasis is experiencing, particularly those related to water and sand, far from authoritarian decisions that do not meet the expectations of the population and that do not take into account the historical and geographical specificities of the region".
The Federation of the Left emphasized that the persistence of the ruling majority of the communal council to adopt the same management method, despite its inability to propose real solutions to the problems of the citizens, starting with the water crisis and its economic and social repercussions, "can only worsen the tension in a region that is particularly sensitive for our country". It held the local and provincial authorities responsible for the worsening of the local situation, particularly in the quarries file.
Finally, the party called on the national coalition for support to the Figuig movement as well as the organizations that compose it to continue the struggle and to develop the necessary initiatives in order to realize the legitimate demands of the inhabitants of the Figuig oasis.
