Essaouira – The women's cooperative “Alamssa Assaouiria” for sewing and embroidery, established with the support of the National Initiative for Human Development in Essaouira, constitutes a prominent model of the Initiative's firm commitment to promoting entrepreneurship and women's empowerment.
This women's structure, which has a production workshop and a marketing space within the “Argana” Integrated Handicraft Complex in Essaouira, offers a wide range of products for men and women, especially djellabas, caftans, and various ready-to-wear clothes, inspired by Moroccan traditions and subject to renewal with a modern “Souirie touch”.
Since its launch in 2020, the cooperative, which benefited from the financial support of the National Initiative for Human Development for the acquisition of necessary equipment and materials, has been designing artisanal accessories such as decorative cushions and embroidered bags, among others, which attract both residents and visitors looking for unique and authentic pieces.
This cooperative is managed by Zahra Afounous, an ambitious young Souirie woman, who decided, after following several specialized training courses in sewing, embroidery, and artisanal product design, alongside five women who share the same determination with her, to embark on the entrepreneurial adventure.
Thanks to intensive work and the financial and technical support of the National Initiative for Human Development, the young enterprise succeeded in structuring a dynamic cooperative that established itself as a local reference in the field of artisanal textiles, highlighting the traditional skill of the women of the City of Winds, while integrating modern sewing and embroidery techniques.
In a statement to the Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP), Zahra Afounous explained that this project is the result of a common will to value local artisanal heritage and give Souirie women an opportunity for economic empowerment.
“Thanks to the valuable support of the National Initiative for Human Development, we were able to organize our activity, develop our equipment, and access enriching training”, she said, highlighting the cooperative's efforts to adapt to market changes by integrating modern designs and diversifying its sales channels, notably through participation in specialized exhibitions, as well as developing an online marketing platform.
She added that in addition to its commercial activities, the “Alamssa Assaouiria” cooperative has engaged in transmitting local artisanal skill to young generations, with the organization of training workshops aimed at girls wishing to learn the trade and professional integration.
The commitment of the National Initiative for Human Development to support the development of income-generating activities, especially through cooperatives, fully embodies the vision and objectives of its third program related to ”Improving income and economic inclusion of young people”, through which the Initiative positions itself as an engine for socio-economic development, and pushing for an environment favorable to innovation and sustainable development.
The success story of the “Alamssa Assaouiria” cooperative, like other similar projects in the Essaouira province, reflects the effectiveness of the continuous interventions of the National Initiative for Human Development to promote the economic and social inclusion of women, by actively integrating them into the local economic fabric.
