The administration of the Essaouira 2 local prison has provided clarifications regarding information circulating on the web, particularly on a Facebook page, concerning "the collapse of a toilet roof in one of the rooms of the Essaouira 2 local prison" and the "limitation of prisoner outings to one hour per day." Faced with the seriousness of the allegations, a complaint against the author of this publication has been filed with the competent public prosecutor's office.
In a clarification on this matter, the prison management wished to specify that since its opening on May 25, 2024, the Essaouira 2 local prison has been regularly inspected by specialized technical commissions.
No incident has been reported to date, and no deficiency or anomaly in its structures and facilities has been noted that could affect the security of the establishment or that of the prisoners, the administration emphasizes, noting furthermore that the regional commission for the control of penal institutions visited the institution on November 8, 2024, and praised the quality of the infrastructure and facilities.
The competent judicial authorities have also visited the premises several times since its inauguration, examining its buildings, facilities, and detention conditions, without making any remarks similar to the allegations disseminated, and consequently, it is affirmed, the claims regarding an alleged collapse of a toilet roof are unfounded and devoid of any basis.
Regarding prisoner outings, the Essaouira 2 local prison indicates that the duration of outings in the courtyard depends on the classification of prisoners established by the establishment's administration. Depending on their category, prisoners benefit from a walk duration of up to one and a half hours per day, in a courtyard equipped with various sports equipment at their disposal.
Faced with the seriousness of these allegations aimed at discrediting the work of the prison administration and the efforts made by its employees to ensure the security of prisoners, their preparation for post-incarceration reintegration, and the implementation of humane detention conditions, the administration has decided to file a complaint against the author of this publication with the competent public prosecutor's office.
