What a joy to receive a tribute in Essaouira! A symbol of interculturality, dialogue, and the coexistence of cultures and civilisations, the blue city recently hosted a special meeting: the authenticity of the host and the originality of the guest. Hassan Mégri came to Essaouira with all the artistic legacy of a legendary group that had amazed all Moroccans, as well as music lovers from all over the world. The hospitality of the Marrakech-Tensift region press club was more than commendable. The musician, who could not omit this artistic past—namely the time when the family vibrated to the rhythm of the "Mégri brothers" group—first addressed the role of culture and the arts in change. For him, revolution could be very gentle thanks to artistic and cultural expression. He explained that dialogue and communication are the ideal means to achieve this long-hoped-for change. The artist in this case, he says, plays the role of a visionary. His son Nasr, present during this artistic evening, listened to Hassan's philosophy like a disciple learning from his master. Equipped with his guitar, he sang in a melodious voice that revealed a sense of continuity. The founding president of the National Music Council and the "Eté des Oudayas" Festival highlighted Morocco's strategic position as a bridge between the Maghreb and the Mashreq, also a source of ideas and creativity between the Middle East on one hand and Europe and the United States on the other.
The artist could not miss the opportunity to discuss his relationship with Mogador, a city of inexhaustible magic, the very origin of this flow of tourists eager to discover this unique way of life, and a city where the coexistence of cultures is a lived reality and not just a fashionable discourse. "Essaouira is unlike any other city, in that it inspires the imagination of creators and one also feels that everyone harbours an artist within themselves," explained the man who has won several national and international awards, including the gold medal from the Academy of Arts in the United States.
Hassan Mégri well deserved this tribute. Abderrahim Achir, president of the Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz press club, rightly recalled this, stressing that the artist remains a living heritage and represents an essential voice for those who wish to discover Moroccan musical heritage.
