Traders in the old Medina of Essaouira are not at the end of their troubles with street vendors. The latter continue to invade the space and complicate the lives of traders who are suffering from an unfavourable economic climate.
Last week, the Association of Traders of Boulevard Zerktouni contacted "Libé" to inform them of the problems that sixty traders face on a daily basis following the invasion of street vendors and the spread of anarchy and crime in this commercial artery known as "El Khaddara".
"We are disturbed and competed with by countless street vendors who occupy the front of our shops. Crime continues to increase given the number of customers assaulted and robbed in broad daylight, including tourists. As a result, Boulevard Zerktouni is less and less frequented by its clientele, who now prefer accessible and more secure centres," a member of the Association told us, complaining about the silence of local authorities, elected officials and security services.
Admittedly, efforts previously made by local authorities had allowed the eradication of the phenomenon at the level of Boulevard Al Massira, but without this campaign reaching all commercial arteries, including Boulevard Zerktouni, which has become hellish, especially during the month of Ramadan.
Incidents are quite frequent; even traders are intimidated or even assaulted, as was the case a few days ago. The said association is once again calling on local officials while reserving the right to protest against this unsustainable situation.
