Abdelkebir Namir, as an intellectual and enthusiast of the architectural, environmental and cultural heritage of Mogador, contacted "Libé" to draw up a most alarming assessment of an entire living environment disfigured by uncivil behaviour.
He is one of the residents of the Bab Doukkala residence, a real estate project carried out by Al Omrane a few years ago, who have not ceased to denounce the illegal, criminal and immoral practices perpetrated daily in front of their doors in full view of the local authorities and elected officials.
"What people don't know is that the architect who 'created' this monument wanted to make it a synthesis of the traditional architecture of the Medina of Essaouira... We find the different forms of arcades (practicable, inscribed, lobed...), the mashrabiya, the symbols of the three monotheistic religions (even Freemasonry), the sabas, different types of balconies, windows, French windows, etc.," specifies Namir, who tries to promote the architectural aspect of this residence, which is undermined on a daily basis.
Indeed, every Souiri can easily imagine the catastrophic state of the passageways and alleys of this residence, invaded by individuals without scruples, who throw their waste there, consume alcohol and drugs there, and assault shopkeepers.
"I am frequently assaulted by tramps and delinquents. We are defenceless; the security elements never enter the residence to restore order. The last time I contacted them, they refused to accompany me, but advised me to carry a stick to defend myself in case of assault," declared the owner of a small café who had just been assaulted in broad daylight by a delinquent.
The residents and shopkeepers are afraid and no one does anything to preserve their right to peace, security and dignity. No one does anything to protect their properties against the daily assaults that occur a few metres from the Auxiliary Forces vehicle, which is nevertheless parked in front of the residence. "Tourists cross the square and pass between the buildings of the residence, holding their noses because of the foul smell of urine. Worse, some occupy the public domain and are transforming this beautiful square into a field of tomato greenhouses. They are even building in hard materials and without permission, in indifference, negligence and corruption. The residents made the effort to erect a grilled gate that cost them 12,000 DH; a café tenant broke his key in the lock so that it would no longer close...", continues Abdelkebir Namir, not without denouncing the silence and complicity of the competent services.
The residents are demanding the enhancement of their residence in order to better safeguard and protect it from hazards. Recently, they decided to create a neighbourhood association, while inviting the Al Omrane group to assume its responsibilities. They also suggested to the Culture delegation the activation of the recommendations of the heritage day held at the museum a short time ago.
