An ecological and biological balance of the forest, an appropriate climate for the inhabitants, balanced and renewed natural resources... such are the needs of the economic capital in terms of the environment. These points were the subject of discussion recently between Mohamed Chafik Benkirane, president of the regional council, and the regional director of water and forests and the fight against desertification of the Centre. During this meeting, the president of the council recalled the importance of activating the communication strategy with the Regional Delegation of Water and Forests in order to participate in the development of the region's forest resources and the protection of the environment. Let us recall that the regional council has invested more than 238,000 DH in various operations related to the environment. It also injected 7.45 MDH into the redevelopment project of the Echellalat region. 10 million dirhams were also granted by the council to participate in the development of the Mohammedia nature reserve. Furthermore, it gave 4 million dirhams for the preservation and revaluation of the forests bordering urban areas in the "El Mejjatia Ouled Taleb" commune under the Médiouna province. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the forests of Mohammedia still suffer from severe degradation due to neglect and the immoderate use of their resources. The low sensitivity of the population, demographic pressure and the weakness of legal tools favour the imbalance of these spaces. In a decade, these forests have diminished by about 40%. The Western zone has receded by 60 to 70%. During the 90s, they were the subject of very numerous fellings. At the Casablanca level, the Bouskoura forest, which also benefits from the financial support of the region, is not really up to the expectations of citizens nor to environmental requirements. "The regional council attaches great importance to the water and forests sector and to infrastructures capable of protecting the life and health of citizens. In this context, it has reserved a significant budget to face environmental challenges such as that of the Oued Bouskoura", affirmed Chafik Benkirane. And to underline that the work on the West Super Collector will begin shortly in order to protect Casablanca from the risk of flooding. Indeed, according to an agreement signed between the various partners, this project entrusted to Casa-Aménagement will begin in 2013 to end in 2016.
Technical details of the West Super Collector
The length of the "West Super Collector" (SCO) will be approximately 7 km at an average depth of 10 metres. The route of this tunnel unfolds under the major arteries of the western zone of the urban perimeter and joins the sea near Sidi Abderrahman. The SCO should be sized to allow the passage of a flow of 100 m3/s without overload, at a flow speed close to 7 m/s. It would be dedicated to the transit of rainwater and could also receive the rainwater sanitation of the crossed neighbourhoods, as well as that of the Anfa airport project.
