A special effort has been made in the Southern provinces in terms of the fight against insalubrious housing, which has allowed for the eradication of shanty towns in Laâyoune and Dakhla. The latter two benefited from 1.5 billion dirhams within the framework of housing, urban planning and city policy projects.
These projects concerned urban renewal, upgrading, development and allotments.
The realisation of this vast programme has allowed for the achievement of satisfactory results, notably the opening to urbanisation of new zones estimated at 1,680 ha, the servicing of more than 46,000 housing lots, the demolition of more than 20,000 shacks in shanty towns and camps in the main cities, to lead to the declaration of Laâyoune as a "city without shanty towns" in July 2008 and Dakhla in January 2010.
More than 9,000 self-construction sites have been opened in cities declared as cities without shanty towns and more than 12,000 households have benefited from urban upgrading operations.
Regarding the city of Smara and its outskirts, a study is underway which focuses on the improvement of conditions for decent housing for the local population, and the creation of an economic dynamic in the city and its regions.
These various projects are carried out by the Al-Omrane Al Janoub Development Group (SAO), which since its creation has been entrusted with a certain number of missions focused mainly on the realisation of the new housing programme in the Southern provinces which essentially aims at the eradication of insalubrious housing fabrics and notably the Al-Wahda camps, the satisfaction of the needs of various social categories and the response to the needs arising from the natural demographic growth of the populations.
The group has also intervened in the rural world through the construction of housing and the realisation of housing operations in ZAP (Protected Agricultural Zone) in several rural centres. This holding also launches promotional operations that generate revenue such as the realisation of social housing, villa lots and economic villas.
